Abdominal ultrasonography

Abdominal ultrasonography

Diagnostic sonography (ultrasonography) is an ultrasound diagnostic imagining technique used for visualizing many of the body organs. Being a non-invasive procedure, ultrasonography is both painless and harmless to the patient.

According to the standards of the Polish Ultrasound Society:

  • all diagnostic procedures must be performed by a qualified and certified sonographer;
  • all ultrasound scans must be performed using appropriate sonographic scanners and transducer probes (depending on the nature of the examination) and follow mandatory procedures;
  • each ultrasound examination must be concluded with a detailed description of all abnormalities detected, together with photographic records.
  • Regardless of the medical referral information, every ultrasound test should also include a complete scan of the organs/ abdominal scan with a detailed assessment of the following structures:
  • liver
  • gallbladder
  • bile duct
  • pancreas
  • spleen
  • kidneys and adrenal glands
  • urinary bladder
  • prostate
  • alimentary canal (stomach, intestine)
